IMMIGRANT DEFENSE FUND
The IMMIGRANT DEFENSE FUND is a financial resource established at Centro, to assist individuals statewide facing immigration-related challenges, particularly those who cannot afford immigration-related legal representation, and provides emergency wrap-around family support for financial needs (food, clothing, utilities, housing) that may arise unexpectedly in that process. The fund will cover the costs of immigration-related legal expenses, such as attorney fees, bonds, and court costs, ensuring we live our values in Wisconsin, that all individuals, including immigrants, have the resources to defend their future and their well-being. These funds will be flexible, so that vulnerable populations are in the best position to navigate the dynamic climate at the national level on their own terms. By focusing on both immigration-related legal defense and wrap-around family support, the Immigrant Defense Fund will ensure the defense of our community's long-term stability. This model emphasizes holistic support and community involvement while recognizing the complex and interconnected nature of the challenges immigrant families face.
Foundations or other institutional donors interested in making a gift, please contact Centro Executive Director, Karen Menendez Coller at karen@micentro.org. Note that if needed based on funder restrictions to fund immigration-related legal services, funds can be specifically designated to wraparound support excluding legal services.
Our Commitment
Centro and our partners form a network culturally responsive, linguistically accessible, and deeply rooted in the community we serve. Our collaborative work is grounded in dignity, safety, equity, and solidarity. The fund is designed to add a valuable resource to our community, strengthening our collective capacity for coordination and a collective response.
Our Future
The Fund officially launched in January 2025. As of the end of 2025, we have disbursed $1.6 million throughout the state with a goal of raising at least $5 million to support Wisconsin families. This work is grounded in solidarity and the belief that there is enough for everyone when we work together.
