Caminos Certified Peer Specialist (CPS)  

This is a 7-week training program that will provide Dane County Latinx participants build a set of skills based on their unique lived experiences to offer support to people receiving services related to mental health or substance use challenges. Connecting, nourishing, and advocating for our resilient community that believes recovery is possible.  With trust and hope a CPS will respect their peer's decisions and together will determine what works the best for their peers. As well as using the terms and language that the person you're supporting prefers. 

To become a Caminos Certified Peer Support Specialist, program participants will receive 48 hours of curriculum training required to pass the online state certification in collaboration with the Wisconsin Peer Specialist Employment Initiative, Just Dane, Dane of County, and City of Madison. In Addition, with our Caminos’ job readiness component participants will enhance their employability skills build a resume, and cover letter, practice interviews and meet potential employers within the mental health field.

The Caminos Bilingual Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) training Program happens 2 times a year, Spring, and Fall.

As a Certified Peer Specialist: 
​

• Support many pathways to recovery, wellness, and meaningful living  
• Use the terms and language that the person you're supporting prefers 
• Provide information about community and recovery-oriented resources upon request  
• Facilitate person-centered goal setting 
• Communicate effectively with peers, other team members, and clinicians 
• Connect with employers state-wide for potential job opportunities within state and county departments, in hospitals, non-profits, or others 

 

During the process, students will gain:

• Skills-growth program: like communication, critical thinking, leadership, organizational skills, learn more about community resources among others. 
• ​Meet & network with employers 
• Case study hours for state exam practice 
• Professional development 
• Caminos Workshop: resume, cover letter, and mock interviews 
• Case management support 
• And other services and resources from Centro Hispano 

 Requirements:

• 18 years old or more
  
• ​High School Diploma here or in another country or GED  
  
• English as a second language (Intermediate to advanced level) 
  
• Fully fluent in Spanish and English 
  
• Computer skills (intermediate to advanced level) 
  
• High Interest and commitment to the program

Our Caminos programs are at no cost to you, so when accepted into the program, you get the scholarship automatically. ​
