About Mercadito:
El Mercadito de Centro started in the summer of 2015 as a way to provide Centro's clients and neighbors the opportunity to buy fresh vegetables and fruits during their visit to Centro. The market's overall mission is to offer an open, healthy and welcoming place where members of Madison’s Southside community can share their cultural heritage and culinary traditions. The market's objective is to add to existing efforts to bring healthy food to the neighborhood (Southside Farmer's Market, and farm stand at the WIC Clinic) and to create innovative strategies to attract more patrons and farmers. The market accepts SNAP benefits. In the summer, the market also accepts Double Your Dollars promotions for SNAP-eligible clients, giving them extra “cash" including to purchase fruits and vegetables.
Through El Mercadito, Centro Hispano aims to create a community market where neighbors and clients can come together over food to learn about healthy eating and have the opportunity to interact with farmers and other food entrepreneurs. Due to its mission, the market has molded each season in order to meet the needs of the vendors and patrons of the market; however, it is our goal to merge the market with the other wellness activities to facilitate the interactions and increase visibility.
Centro’s Mercadito is not your traditional farmer's market -- modeled on the little street markets you find in Latin America, it brings together culinary experiences with entertainment the whole family can enjoy. Mercadito creates a place and time for the local community to gather each week and pause for a moment. It provides access to fresh and healthy food on the Southside of Madison throughout the year while showcasing the diverse cultural and culinary traditions of our Latino community.
What you’ll find at Mercadito:
Local products for sale, produce, traditional Latin American food and beverage, crafts, traditional entertainment, activities for children and more. Check our facebook page weekly to find out what we will be featuring each week!
